Stay Classy Upper Deck
by Jeff on Nov.12, 2009, under Random Thoughts
Upper Deck announced that are donating 100,000 packs of cards to troops overseas, and are attempting to raise 1,000,000 packs to send through donation centers with drop off boxes or through the mail donations. Good cause and everything, and I’m sure this will make a lot of troops happy, I’m not disputing that.
But this is feeding on peoples emotions/psyche advertising that really makes me think bad about companies. You know why Upper Deck wants you to send the other 900,000 packs? So they sell 900,000 more packs. And you can guarantee the 100,000 packs they contributed are of course tax write offs. I’m all for helping charity and good causes, but don’t market crap through the notion of charity.
The classy thing to do would be to announce you donated 100,000 packs to troops overseas and leave it at that. You then have put the notion of donating packs into peoples minds, still get your tax write off, and didn’t start a marketing campaign to feed off of peoples sense of charity.

Of course this is my opinion, that is what blogs are after all, opinions. Feel free to make your own or donate how you want.

I disagree. Sure, it’s a bit of promotion for the company, but look at it from a different light. Look at the end result.
I was in a card shop about a year ago and a soldier who just went through two tours in Iraq came in and was thrilled to open a box of cards because he hasn’t been able to do so in a few years.
I’m thinking of that guy. Not of Upper Deck.

I think if Upper Deck were going to help collect unopened packs of any company’s trading cards, it would seem like less of a marketing move.

You got it right. It’s totally marketing. It’s like when sick rich people put down $50k for a clean water project in Africa and then host a dinner party trying to collect the remaining $750k.
